Writing Teachers in Adult Corrections settings

by Bill Heenan
(Albuquerque, NM)

-Motivating offenders to write
-Creating and advising inmate publications
-Getting offenders to share with other inmates (obtain/give
feedback) in order to improve their writing. Male offenders
in particular tend to keep their thoughts to themselves,
sharing only with the instructor.

Linda responds:

Thanks for suggesting this forum, Bill. We will see how many other want a forum devoted just to teaching writing in corrections institutions.

You might consider sharing your best/worst experience. (I believe the format allows to 5,000 words.)

The problem of getting students to give and receive feedback from peers is a problem in many teaching situations. The issue and solutions can be discussed in the writing processs forum.

Talking about anxiety, Bill hasn't even started teaching his jail English class yet. He starts Monday. I applaud his anticipating a challenge, and we wish him well.
