Teaching grammar for writing?
Found anything that really works?

Few areas of the English curriculum are as frustrating to most teachers as teaching grammar for writing.

Students do OK with the worksheet exercises. They answer standardized test questions pretty well. But require them to write a paragraph and you'd think they had never seen the inside of an English class.

What is wrong?

And, more important, what can we do about it?

There's plenty of research about the kind of grammar instruction that carries over into writing and the kind that does not. What most of us need is practical help applying that information in our classes every day.

That's why I created this forum.

If you have a question, a concern, a success story about getting Josh and Caitlin and the other 23 kids in your 2:10 p.m. 10th grade class to write grammatically, please share it here with other writing teachers. We'd really appreciate it.

Fellow teachers and tutors, please chime in with your responses. You'll find a link at the bottom of each visitor-created webpage so you can add your comments.

My students asked for it

My students asked for help to keep on developing their ability to correct their own grammar errors after our course together ended. The material I wrote for them is now available to other students as an e-book.
